Founded by Ajayadeva, an 11th-century Rajput ruler, the city of Ajmer houses the tomb of Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Hasan Chisti, the popular 13th century Sufi Saint and the famous Mayo College, a prestigious school here, founded by British in 1875.

Located in the state of Rajasthan, 130 km southwest of Jaipur, Ajmer is washed by streams of Luni River flowing southwestward and by tributaries of the Banas River flowing eastward. Later the Scindia rulers of Gwalior took over Ajmer, which was further taken over by the British in 1818.

Urs is the main festival of Ajmer, which is the celebrated every year in the seventh month of the lunar calendar. The city is visited by millions of pilgrims from all over the world to attend the death anniversary of the great saint Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Hasan Chisti every year.
