Situated in Shahdol district, among the hills of the Vindhya Range, Bandhavgarh National park is also known as the White Tiger Country. It has the highest density of Tiger population in India. Spread in an area of 448 sq. km., at the center of the Park is the Bandhavgarh hill, which is 811 meter in length, sided with great cliffs and eroded rocks. The valleys end in small meadows known as 'Bohera'. Sal forest is the main vegetation in the valleys while mixed deciduous forest are found on the hills Bamboo is found throughout the region.
The place is also known for its famous Bandhavgarh Fort. It is said that the fort was constructed around 2,000 years ago, as there are references to it in the ancient books like the Narad-Panch Ratra and the Siva Purana. There are also numerous caves around the fort that contains the ancient Sanskrit inscriptions and shrines.
The fort has been under the patronage of many dynasties. The Maghas ruled it in the 1st century AD, the Vakatakas in the 3rd century, the Sengars in the 5th century and the Kalchuris in the 10th century. Finally, the Baghels took it over in the 13th century AD, and ruled it until 1617, till Maharajah Vikramaditya Singh moved his capital to Rewa. In 1968, the forest was constituted as a National Park.
Bandhavgarh National Park is densely populated with wildlife and the main attraction among them is the Indian Tigers. Species like Sambar, Barking Deer, the great Indian Gaur, the Indian Bison and Nilgai are the common sight in the forest, which can been seen through the tour packages for Bandhavgarh.
This National Park is also rich in bird life as there are 250 species of birds.
