Founded by Bahada Rao (famous as Bar Rao), in the 13th century, Barmer is known as a 'miniature Rajasthan' with all its richness in crafts, dances and music. Bahada Rao named the town after his name, Barmer- the hill fort of Bar. Presently the town is famous all over the world for its marvelous and wonderful work of woodcarving, pottery, carpets, embroidery work, block printed fabrics and multi-hued traditional costumes.

A number of important kingdoms flourished at various times in the town during the medieval age. The chief rulers of Barmer at the time were Khed, Kiradu, Pachpadra, Jasol, Tilwara, Sheo, Balotara and Mallani. In 1212AD Rao Siha, founder of the Rathore clan, conquered Khed in Barmer district and planted the Rathore flag in the area. Later, British annexed the town in 1836 and a superintendent thenceforth governed the town.

Barmer is also known for the famous Chintamani Parasnath Jain Temple. The temple is dedicated to the Jain Tirthankara Parasvanath. Located in the western part of the town, the temple was built in the 12th century. There are series of decorative paintings in the interiors of the complex.

The other famous structure of the region of the town is the Junagarh Fort and the Juna Jain temple. The temple was built was around late 12th century or early 13th century. The fort is surrounded by a series of hills, adjacent to which lies a small lake. Between the mountain peaks is beautiful small island known as Juna Barmer, which houses a small well.

In this region of sun-drenched sands, situated on the banks of the Luni River, a place named Khed, near Barmer is too famous for four temples. The most exquisite of them are the Ranchor Rai Mandir. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu (the Preserver in the holy trinity of Hindu gods), the temple houses an image of a deity, which looks as if it might collapse any minute. At the gate is an image of Garuda (an eagle which is Lord Vishnu's carrier).
