Finally the city became the seat of Madras Presidency, the southern division of British Imperial India in the 19th century, owing to its importance as a major port of India.
The city is a famous for its beaches and colonial monuments and ancient temples. The famous Marina beach is 13 km long. It is the second largest beach in the world. The sands of the beach appear golden due to the reflection of the sunlight. The soothing waters tranquilize the body and mind as one feels the soothing breeze and rippling waves pass you by. One of the famous landmarks of the city is the Fort of St. George, built in 1654. The fort has a six-meter tall wall, reflecting the power of British at that time. The other well known places of the city includes the Sri Parthasarathy Temple, dedicated to Lord Krishna, built by the Pallavas in the 8th century, and the Kapaleeshwar Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.
