The inhabitants of this town were wealthy merchants, who fortified this well planned town in the early 18th century. Each Havelis or palace in the town has its own unique feature. The Saraf havelis are too are well known in the region because of their architectural uniqueness. The Binsidhar Newatia Haveli is famous for its peculiar paintings on its outer eastern wall.
