Ujjain Situated on the bank of the River Shipra, in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, Ujjain is described by the legendry poet Kalidasa as "The town, fallen from heaven to bring heaven on earth". One of the holiest cities of Hindus, Ujjain is said to be home of Shiva as Mahakal, the presiding deity of Ujjain. According to an ancient Hindu calendar, the first meridian of the planet earth passes through Ujjain. The city is also famous as one of the sacred religious congregation of the Hindus, the Kumbh Mela is held here.

Earlier known as Avantika and Ujjaini, Ujjain was an important part of the ancient trade route. The city was an important political center under the great ruler Chandragupta II. Kalidasa, the Indian Shakespeare was the court poet during that time. He has described the city and its rich heritage in his most celebrated work Meghdoot.

This sacred city has been under the patronage of many dynasties including the Muslims rulers, the Mughals and the Marathas. Later the British too made it as one of their important commercial center. But the city still boasts of its rich ancient culture and its close association with the Hindu religion.
