Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram) is set in a boulder-strewn landscape, 58Kms south of Madras on the Bay of Bengal. It has become, in the last couple of decades, a magnet for long staying travelers. Famous for its Shore temples, that were carved out of rock along the Coromandel coast in the 7th and 8th centuries. It is known especially for its rathas (temples in the form of chariots), mandapas (cave sanctuaries), giant open-air reliefs such as the famous "Descent of the Ganges" and the temple of Rivage, with thousands of sculptures to the glory of Siva. Mamallapuram attracts tourists from all over the globe to its monumental splendour and sunny beaches.
